Why Statement by Sharon

I want to wake up on Wednesday, November 6th with no regrets knowing that I gave it all I had to change the course of my country’s future by electing leadership that believes in compassion, inclusion and a woman's right to control her own body.

We all need some version of an "elevator speech" to respond when asked "Why do you support the Harris/Walz campaign?" The most persuasive messages are those we share from our own personal experiences. Here's mine and now I hope you'll share yours too!

WHY I SUPPORT KAMALA HARRIS AND TIM WALZ

I want to wake up on Wednesday, November 6th with no regrets knowing that I gave it all I had to change the course of my country’s future by electing leadership that believes in compassion, inclusion and a woman's right to control her own body.

I've advocated for human rights issues for a long time.

Before there were "feminists" I was advocating for civil rights, then women's rights as human rights, specifically the right to make one's own decisions about our bodies.

I personally helped care for a roommate whose botched abortion resulted in a serious infection

I babysat a neighbor's 4 young children while she found an illegal source to terminate a pregnancy that would have devastated their family.

In 1973 when Roe v Wade established a woman's right to privacy under the 14th Amendment, I celebrated and relaxed a bit.

Fast forward to 2016 when Hillary Clinton ran for President and it seemed we were destined to see our first woman in the White House.

I remember begging my dying mother to hang on long enough to vote for a woman, which she did despite some misgivings about Hillary.

Then I remember the shock I felt as the returns came in and it was clear that Donald Trump had won.

I learned a valuable lesson when Clinton lost to Trump. We all took our collective feet off the gas believing we could coast to victory.

As a 78-year-old woman, this is probably my "last stand" and as Tim Walz says we can do anything for 87 (or whatever number is left) days, and we can sleep when we're dead.

I've committed to doing something every one of those days, even if it's only wearing a t-shirt or sending an email. Thankfully, I'm going to run this race with my daughter @Stephanie Stickney by my side. She’s helped me establish this Action Team using a Facebook group that we've named Stepping Forward with Kamala.

Now it’s your turn. Please share your stories as to WHY you support the Harris/Walz Campaign and tag your friends!
